EAST MEATH GARDA DISTRICT

I am calling for a new East Meath Garda District to be seriously considered under the new policing plan for County Meath.

I held a meeting recently with the Minister for Justice, Brian Lenihan T.D. on this issue and I have made representation to Chief Superintendent Padraic Rattigan in relation to the lack of Garda numbers in East Meath.

Minister Lenihan has emphasised that the programme for Government includes a commitment to recognise the need for policing in areas of growing population and the Meath Coast is one such area. A new East Meath Garda District including the areas of Laytown / Bettystown, Stamullen, Duleek and Slane under the jurisdiction of a Superintendent would be recognition of the huge increase in population in the region and the specific needs of communities here.

The Government will conduct a detailed analysis of Garda-to-population ratio in the area to ensure that we have appropriate policing. I welcome very much this commitment.

One of the most significant issues we face in Meath East is Garda numbers which are important to give people confidence that they are safe in their communities and that crimes will be dealt with. I will keep pushing this issue until we have the Garda numbers that we need.
