I was delighted to welcome An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern on his second last day in office, back to Meath East for the official opening of the Battle of the Boyne site which will open to the public on May 10.
Significant work has been done to develop the Site by the OPW and the new venue will include exhibitions depicting the Battle, an audiovisual presentation, a display of replica 17th Century weaponry, a walled garden and other walkways as well as a Tea Room with seating for 100.
The site will make for a wonderful day out for local visitors and tourists. I fully expect that there will be considerable interest from North of the border as the Site will be of particular interest to Unionists and members of the Orange Order.
I am confident that Drogheda as the nearest town along with East Meath will be well placed to take advantage of this increase in tourism to the region and this will give a vital boost to our local economy.
