Southern Environs Plan for Drogheda

In general, I am welcoming the Local Area Plan for the Southern Environs of Drogheda which has been put on public display by Meath County Council this week.

The Plan provides for new zoning to allow for a new population of over 12,000 people on the southern environs of Drogheda. Lands that are already zoned residential and recent planning permissions in the southern environs of the town could also provide for a population of about another 6,000. We are talking about a significant amount of people.

The plan goes someway towards addressing issues such as access roads, schools, community facilities and employment generating needs, but it is essential that the Council gets it absolutely right. We have enough experience in getting it wrong in East Meath, unfortunately.

The public have the right to examine the plan, either on the internet or at the offices of Meath County Council and to make submissions - but any submissions must be in to the Council by 1 October next

The Local Area Plan affects a lot of areas in County Meath around Drogheda, including Colpe, Mornington, Beamore, Bryanstown, Platten Road, Donore Road and Rathmullen. Julianstown residents will also be impacted by the plan.

In a lot of ways this is plan is necessary for the area and aims fully to comply with regional planning guidelines. However, the public must have their say.

To that end, I am organizing a public meeting in the Boyne Valley Hotel Drogheda on Thursday 11 September next at 7.30pm to discuss the Local Area Plan with local residents and to get their ideas as to how the Plan can be made absolutely right. This meeting is being held in good time for the 1 October deadline for submissions. All are welcome.

For the last year and a half, I have consistently called for planning in the Southern Environs of Drogheda to be done by way of a Local area Plan.

Local Councillor Pat Boshell will attend the meeting. Residents of Drogheda County Louth are also welcome because the plan will be relevant to them also.

After that, it is over to Meath County Council and the Councillors will have to consider the submissions made and incorporate the good ideas as necessary. The Local Councillors have the final say in adopting this plan and I as TD have no direct role in this local decision. However, I want to do everything in my power to get as much public involvement as possible in this Local Area Plan process and will be making my own detailed submission particularly surrounding schools and community facilities.
